Speech at Rockford Area Schools
-
Speech is a Minnesota State High School League Activity with official rules, invitational meets, and a State Tournament in April of every year. Invitational meets generally occur on Saturdays in February and March.
There are 13 different event categories. These range from performing a selection from a novel to engaging in persuasive speaking about a current event. Students can write their own pieces or perform pieces of their choosing.
Speech gives students of all interests a wide variety of ways to express their creativity, boost their confidence, and be involved in a unique and special experience. Speech also helps students prepare for college and beyond by developing public speaking and critical thinking skills. Most importantly, though, Speech is designed to be a fun activity which allows students to share their gifts with others. While there are competitions, the Rockford Speech Team prioritizes personal growth, not competition.
Students are required to practice once a week with a coach. Practices are held on Tuesday night (6-8pm) at the Rockford Community Center and High School Media Center after school on Thursdays until approximately 5pm.
